Election Day is Right Around the Corner

I know it’s hard to believe but another election day is right around the corner! This is an important election since ALL of the State’s constitutional officers are up; one of our two U.S. Senate seats; all 19 Congressional seats; all 118 House members; 21 of the 59 Senate seats and certain local officials are up.

The primary election will be held on February 2, 2010 which is the earliest primary date EVER in Illinois. You need to be aware of some key related dates of importance.

  • Traditionally, the deadline for registering to vote is 30 days prior to the election which would be Tuesday January 5, 2010.
  • A recent change in State election law established a Grace Period Registration which authorizes residents to register to vote or change your address from January 6-January 26, 2010 at the office of an election authority.  However, you must cast your ballot at that same office (or by mail at the discretion of your local election authority).
  • Other options for voting in Illinois law for this year’s primary election include early voting, which is from January 11-January 28, 2010. Election authorities in each county will announce the locations of Early Voting Centers.  Early voting may be an even more popular choice this year since bad weather could be a factor.
  • Absentee voting is another option if you know that you will not be able to vote in person on Election Day.  Illinois law requires that you request an application from your local election authority.  The application to vote absentee can be made in person or by mail. Check with your local election authority for the dates for compliance.

You can check online to see if you are registered to vote at the following link: www.elections.state.il.us/VotingInformation/RegistrationLookup.aspx

Remember to exercise your right to vote!!
