Mandatory seat belts for ALL passengers in Illinois effective Jan. 1, 2012

Image of seat belt and warning signIllinois has had a mandatory seat belt law in place for the driver and front seat passenger since July 1, 1985. Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, ALL passengers will be required to buckle up!

There are a limited number of exceptions to the law. One of particular note is the exemption for a driver or passenger who is unable, for medical or physical reasons, to wear a seatbelt. This, however, requires that person to have in their possession a written statement from their doctor attesting to that fact.

A violation of the mandatory seat belt law is a petty offense, subject to a fine not to exceed $25.

  1. Can you email me a copy of the exact law. I was given a ticket for no seat belt in Illinois and my fine was $60, not $25. It was my first violation.

In Illinois is it legal to turn right at a red light? Can you send me a copy of this law as well.
