When Oak Park REALTOR® Catherine Simon-Vobornik wanted to volunteer in her community, she found an organization that needed help and was a great match for her leadership and organizational skills: the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry.
In three years with the not-for-profit charity, the Baird & Warner broker has organized three Holiday Bazaars and a St. Patrick’s Day Bash.
Simon-Vobornik says, “Having a good meal is a basic need for everyone. When I found out there was an increasing need right in our community, I worked with other REALTORS® and community members to host a Holiday Bazaar in which the vendors donated a portion of their proceeds to help support the food pantry.”
According to the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry, more than 46,000 people were served during the fiscal year 2015, and the organization provided food and access to health screenings, counseling and nutrition education classes to needy families in 12 area zip codes.
One of her favorite stories about food pantry volunteer work includes an event from March 2014. “I had a client who was rehabbing a historic home. We held a St. Patrick’s Day Bash and invited neighbors and members of the community to view the home in exchange for a cash donation. We were able to collect $4,000 at this event.”
Simon-Vobornik, who started her real estate career in 2003, says she’s been involved with the Oak Park Area Association of REALTORS® for several years. “I started on the directory committee and special events committee. I then became a director for two years, served as the secretary for two years and I am currently the treasurer. I was awarded the REALTOR® of the Year Award by my association in 2015.”
