In Cahokia, more and more people are learning about Chuck Baer Realty, Inc., through the efforts of Managing Broker Cindy Cannon and the community beautification projects she’s organized since 2013.
Some residents may recognize the big red mascot used in conjunction with the projects and the slogan, “The Baer that Cares.” Others may have seen the results of the projects or have volunteered to help paint, board windows or cut grass at vacant homes in Cahokia, just southeast of St. Louis in St. Clair County.
Cannon says: “My hometown and business location, Cahokia, was a village that suffered tremendously from a high number of foreclosures. This left a great number of vacant properties that became subject to vandalism and neglect, posing hazards to children as well as adults in the community. So, when my staff and I recognized the need, we determined it was time to step up and give back to the community.”
She says volunteers work with landlords and the village’s Code Enforcement Office to obtain a list of affected properties, then either purchase materials to clean and repair the properties or receive donations from community members. Monthly projects are scheduled and volunteers are recruited.
“It is hard to choose just one story to share,” says Cannon. “But the highlight is most definitely when neighbors approach us as we are working. Sometimes they thank us and offer refreshments. They have even become volunteers wanting to help pay it forward.
“It is heartwarming and we are overjoyed with happiness when we are able to make someone feel safer in their neighborhood and experience their thankfulness and gratitude,” she says. “This is more fulfilling than any award. However, I was sincerely grateful and honored to receive the 2015 Community Achievement Award from the REALTOR® Association of Southwestern Illinois (RASI).”
Cannon is a member of RASI and has served on some committees for the Illinois REALTORS®.
