One of Illinois REALTORS’ signature education programs began Wednesday with a panel that explored the tactics necessary to become a top agent.
The association’s GRI Grad program runs through Thursday at the Embassy Suites and Conference Center in East Peoria. The grad course is an annual program which brings in some of the best speakers in the real estate business and provides up to six hours of continuing education.
Former Illinois REALTOR President Jim Kinney moderated the top producer panel. Among the hot topics: The need to build a list on online recommendations.
While some agents are reluctant to ask for referrals and recommendations, REALTOR Kay Phillips of Libertyville said it is a necessity.
“Don’t be shy about asking,” she said.
For REALTORS who are just starting to build their referral networks, Phillips suggested reconnecting with anyone a broker has come-in contact in the past.
Springfield REALTOR Kyle Killebrew agreed.
“People are making decisions on this type of information, so you have to do it,” he said. “If someone only has three reviews, that’s better than nothing.”
Worried about getting a negative comment? Matt Silver, president of the Chicago Association of REALTORS said there are lessons to be learned from any negative feedback.
“If I get a negative comment, it gives me pause and makes me want to find out why,” he said. “Don’t be afraid of negativity — use it to get better.”
The panel was the first session of the day. Also tapped to speak at the program are Nobu Hata, NAR’s director of digital engagement, and noted trainer Bruce Aydt.
The GRI Grad course concludes Thursday with sessions by Illinois REALTORS Marki Lemons-Ryhal and Carrie Bey-Little, who will talk about using video for online success.
