Giunta to provide inspirational message at Conference & Expo

Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War, will appear at the REALTORS® Conference & Expo on Sunday, Nov. 5 for the Inspirational Program. Register now for his presentation.

President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Honor to Giunta at the White House on Nov. 16, 2010. He was the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor for service in Iraq or Afghanistan, and the eighth member to receive the nation’s highest military decoration for valor in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On Oct. 25, 2007, Giunta’s platoon was ambushed by insurgents in eastern Afghanistan during his second combat deployment. After his platoon was split into two groups, he intercepted two insurgents as they tried to carry away an injured American soldier. In the process, Giunta killed one insurgent, wounded another and then provided security and medical aid to his soldier colleague until the rest of their platoon could help.

Giunta began his military career in November 2003 by enlisting in the Army. He is a veteran of nine training deployments and two combat deployments.

He currently serves as the Rear Detachment Non-Commissioned Officer-In-Charge (NCOIC) of Battle Company, and he is responsible for the training, morale, health, welfare and accountability of all assigned sky soldiers. He also works with other Rear Detachment NCOICs to make sure family members of soldiers deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom X receive appropriate care.

In addition to the Medal of Honor, Giunta has received many other military honors including the:

  • Bronze Star Medal
  • Purple Heart
  • Army Commendation Medal and
  • Army Achievement Medal.

Giunta grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Make sure you register for a Premier Access pass or the Nov. 5 one-day registration to attend Giunta’s presentation.
