3 reasons why ethical leadership important for REALTORS®

Trainer Bruce Aydt uses his experience as a REALTOR® and a lawyer to connect with his students.

Trainer Bruce Aydt shared a day’s worth of lessons about the importance of ethical leadership with members of the 2017 Leadership Development Program at the Illinois REALTORS® offices Wednesday.

Near the end of the day, he offered three insights any Illinois REALTORS® could take to heart about ethical decision making:

  1. “Ethical choices in leadership roles go well beyond the (REALTOR®) Code of Ethics,”
  2. “Leaders face ethical choices in virtually every part of their leadership role,” and
  3. “Leadership roles — like building consensus — revolve around building ethical principles.”

Participants in the Illinois REALTORS® Leadership Program meet periodically for training that could help them assume leadership positions on the state and national level. The 2017 class, which met for two days in Springfield this week, took part in today’s session, titled: “Ethical Business Decisions.”  Aydt’s includes:

  • Ayn Bartok, All in One Real Estate Company (Egyptian Board of REALTORS®);
  • Michael Gobber, Real Living Gobber Real Estate (Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS®);
  • Terri Jeffries, United Real Estate-Chicago (Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS®);
  • Becky Kirchner, RE/MAX Plaza (Heartland REALTOR® Organization);
  • Eric Porter, RE/MAX Realty Associates (Champaign County Association of REALTORS®);

®…small in size but important to your business.

It’s that little registration symbol (®) you can’t quite figure out how to key-in on the computer. But don’t leave it out…you’ve worked hard to earn the title and respect of being a REALTOR®.

Not every real estate licensee is a REALTOR®. This mark identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics. (The preferred form for the term is all capital letters followed by the registration symbol “®”. NAR outlines trademark and usage guidelines on their Web site, www.realtor.org/LetterLw.nsf/pages/TrademarkLogoRules.)

So when you’re typing away at the computer, adhere to NAR’s usage guidelines and try one of these steps to insert the registration symbol after ‘REALTOR’:

  1. Locate the symbol in the character map utility and insert.
  2. Cntrl+Alt+R – This shortcut works in some programs such as Microsoft Word.
  3. Alt+0174 – This character code works almost every time for me. It’s a tricky combination, I know, but once you’ve keyed it a dozen times it becomes habit.
